Deadwood is the county seat of Lawrence County, South Dakota. It was named after dead trees found in its gulch by early settlers. The Black Hills Gold Rush made the city popular in the 1870s and at its height the population was 25,000 attracting many old west figures such as Wyatt Earp, Calamity Jane and Wild Bill Hickok to name a few. Deadwood is a city rich in history with the entire town designated as a National Historic Landmark District. Daily reenactment shows are a highlight that attracts tourists and residents to downtown Deadwood. The rich history offers endless opportunities for things to do in Deadwood. Gaming, dining, entertainment and lodging all make Deadwood an exciting and memorable destination in South Dakota.
